ok you guys I havent read any manga at all...I've only watched the anime...you've got to remember that the biju are the demons (like kyuubi) and they are sealed into humans which then become jinchuuriki (because they have the biju inside of them).
3) Now knowing that, I remember this one episode where grandma from the sand village (the one who fought sasori with sakura) said that the biju are like secret weapons that the villages use to display power. (sort of like a nuclear bomb)...they sealed a biju into gaara so that they would have gaara as a weapon for the sand village...and so I would presumably assume that the kyuubi was sealed into naruto for the same reasons as Gaara. So basically, the villages want to have the jinchuuriki for several reasons....1) other villages less likely to go to war with them (yes the sound village wanted to go to war but its orochimaru who is freakin' god-like anyway AND the sand village has their own jinchuuriki)....2) in times of war the jinchuuriki is the "ultimate weapon/trump card" ....it's basically a display of power between the villages.
As far as will the Kyuubi die if Naruto dies....I'm pretty sure that he will, but I'm not quite sure...I do know that the kyuubi would AT LEAST die temporarily...
and as for does the Kyuubi have respect for him....I think that he does...but not to the point that the kyuubi would want to give up its hopes of living its own life (whether that is through the body of naruto or not...)...I don't think that the kyuubi would put naruto's well being ahead of its own...
