My take on this...
Spoiler
He's taking the Ben Kenobi approach to the truth, it's all true from a certain point of view, and he's letting out important bits that don't serve his purpose.
An Uchiha did summon the Kyubi, and that would've been Madara himself.
Things just didn't go as planned, courtesy of the Fourth.
Madara had been stirring up disloyalty amongst the Uchiha's, long before they were "segregated" (although I would like to note that considering their size in the village, it would not be strange for the Uchiha Clan to live clustered together and away from others. If, I'm not mistaken the Hyuga's do the exact same thing, with the branch family living clustered around the main family's compound), hence why Itachi was assigned to find out more about what was going on and who was behind it, most likely this is what lead him to kill his best friend, and thus gain the mangekyo (sp?).
Unfortunately, while doing his investigative work, Itachi went over to the Dark Side as well. His main purpose of putting a stop to Madara might've still been true. But loyalty to his village was out the window as well, what he did to Sasuke, all his unmentioned crimes.. Itachi was definitely no longer batting for the angels.
I think that Madara doesn't differ that much from Orochimaru. Peace is boring. Only conflict can lead to new and interesting developments and a proper challenge to ascend to new heights. And just like Orochimaru pretended to Jiraiya's face that he was his friend, so probably did Madara do the same with the First.
