The real question now becomes: Will Sasuke and Naruto continue with this cycle.
With Sasuke being the betrayer (like Orochimaru and Madara) and Naruto the gullible one (like Jiraiya and the First), who just wants his friend back.
Side note..
Spoiler
Something that I did notice in looking back at the Itachi-Sasuke fight, after going through some of the older Shippuuden episodes.
If, you look at the Shippuuden episodes where Sasuke's memories of Itachi play a role. Then you'd see that Itachi flicks/taps his fingers against Sasuke's forehead. This is usually where he's beckons Sasuke to come to him, and Sasuke rushing in, looking for a hug, only for him to be disappointed as Itachi subsequently brushes him off.
Now, I'm not quite certain which Manga chapters those are, but if they're a faithful transcriptions, then it becomes rather interesting to note.
That at the end of the Sasuke-Itachi fight, when we're expecting Itachi to rip Sasuke's eyes out, he instead tapped him on the forehead again. We all assumed this was simply due to exhaustion, no longer having his full sight etc. Now Madara claimed that Itachi used a physical touch to transfer the Amaterasu technique into Sasuke, thus suggesting that Itachi's tap was when this occurred.
It makes me wonder though, this type of technique transfer is anything but common from what we've seen thus far. And the Third was known to be a master of all the techniques in Konoha, except for those requiring a Kekkei Genkai, could this have been some type of medical jitsu taught to Itachi by the Third for his mission.
Did he prep Sasuke to be his back-up, in case he were to fail in his mission/go astray, so that at least someone would be able to stop Madara?
It would be a perfect cover story in a sense.
Madara: So why didn't you kill the brat?
Itachi: Because I intend to use him to achieve Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan.
Madara: Fair enough.
It might have been figured that only a Uchiha could fully defeat an Uchiha. But with having to kill off the traitorous Uchiha's (for Konoha) as well as the innocent ones (to prove his worth to Madara), that meant there wouldn't be any left as a back-up if he were to fail.
Except for Sasuke, whom he could spare, because of the supposed need for his eyes.
Also something to consider.
