PErsonally I adored GantZ, it utterly dismissed the cliched way anime regularly deals with its characters, and it's portrayal of events.
The cast of characters changes more than any other anime, with only one staying the distance to the end, it really gets the sense of desperation across that the people going through it have to be feeling, the confusion, the uncertainty and it was more blood-soaked that Elfin Lied. No idea why it's so overlooked.
Anywho, enough of me singing it's praises, the final mission in the anime wasn't exactly my cup of tea, it detracted from the whole GantZ feel set up in the previous missions, and the ending was rubbish and left up to the viewer to decide what happened to Kurono.
The manga carries on for more missions, and the whole "Kurono alien" thing is, fortunately, not present. It's on chapter 260+ at the minute, in the middle of the 10th mission.
