To Love-Ru?
So episode 20 was a complete letdown.
There are 26 episodes in the series and that one felt like it was just a filler. i mean its nothing but the anime that rito and lala are always watching and it didnt seem in place with everything else. so waiting on episode 21 to be subbed and hopefully, with it almost being the end of the series the story picks back up because rito still hasnt found how to be number one in the universe yet and hes swooning over haruna more and more these days...im honestly confused where this series is going. le sigh

That's because it was filler. 50~75% of the anime past ep 13 has been non-manga filler. Pregnant cat episode? 100% filler. Haunted house episode? Approx 50% filler.
This series really should have ended with 13 episodes. I actually fell asleep during episode 20.

Yes and no. Pure ecchi with no story what-so-ever is just meaningless. Even extreme ecchi shows such as Kanokon still have an underlining plot. I'm sure even most hentai has a plot, no matter how thin. TLR is an adaption from a very popular manga and most manga readers would be more interested in the anime if it followed the manga.
That all being said, the reason I like ecchi shows is because I find them funny. I enjoy perverse humor and find other comedy animes (ex: Pani Poni Dash) just not as funny.
I think the majority of ecchi fans feel the same way. They're not watching the animes for the ecchi but the ecchi is part of the reason they watch.

That's what I think. It's a comedy. With shows like Code Geass, I want to watch the next episode because of the plot, but with shows like To Love-Ru, I want to watch the next episode just because of the jokes. And when jokes are hard to come by, a random panty-flash is pretty damn funny in the meantime. I guess to me, the on-going story is more of a way to set up similar jokes in future episodes than it is something I'm actually interested in. You know that Lala will continue to throw herself at Rito, Rito will continue to look longingly at Haruna, and random aliens will always interfere. That's pretty much the formula for the on-going plot, in my eyes at least. Just a set-up for jokes.
Edit: I just re-read your last comment and I think what I should have said is, in a comedy you can have episodes that are unrelated to each other and there's nothing wrong with that. So in 22 minutes, you have a beginning, middle, and conclusion to a mini-story, which in itself, since it's a comedy, is just a series of situations in which jokes can occur. Just look at pretty much any animated American comedy. The Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy... No on-going plot in those shows whatsoever, but that doesn't stop episodes of those shows from having a story, or being funny. I see To Love-Ru much the same way. It's like an American comedy stuck in the body of a Japanese comedy, but with a major boob job. For some reason, every anime show I've ever seen has an on-going plot and with a show like this, I have absolutely no idea why it needs one.

I get what you're saying about the episodic American cartoons. You make a valid point, sometimes they are quite funny. I agree shows don't need a ongoing plot device to be humorous.
My main point was that the TLR anime is an adaption of the manga. The manga does have an overall story arc. I understand that adaption doesn't entail strict adherence but since I've read the manga I feel that the funnier parts of the anime were "canon". Of course, that's just my opinion.
I was very close to dropping this series as it became boring and seemed to drag. Episode 21 has changed my opinion and I've decided to continue through the rest of the series. I'm hoping TLR has an OVA or two later down the road as OVAs of comedy series' tend to be hilarious.
{OOC: How is Geass over all? I'm planning on marathoning it later.}

i thought kanokon had a very good story, it was one of those forbidden love kind of things with an oversexed girlfriend in the mix. yes the story was shallow at times and the laughs were good but overall the ending was excellent and thats what counts. as for to-love ru the basic story is there it just seems like the story went off track the episode after lala's dad gave him the ultimatum. kind of dissapointed atm. i love the -kun's devices she makes up though, i laugh everytime i hear haru haru build-kun or something along those lines as she has a really cute voice and it lends to the overall feeling.

I'm probably the wrong person to ask since I'm currently obsessed with this show, and since it was probably the first anime I ever really liked, but I think it's awesome.

@jerseyse410: Yeah Kanokon was hillarious. It has forever changed the way I think about cake. As for To LOVE-Ru, I agree it had gone too far off track but if you haven't had the chance to watch episode 21 yet I believe you'll be pleasently surprised.
@Plectrum & Naga: All I've heard about Geass is good things. I've kept myself from reading anything about it so I wouldn't spoil it, thankfully. It always happens, there are a few greats I miss every season. I plan on marathoning Code Geass, Macross Frontier, and World Destruction when they're over. Hope you guys are right!

Nope, a lot of the anime episodes are partially to completely original content. The two are only vaguely similar.
