Elemental Gelade
Sometimes translated as Elemental Gerad, in this series I felt that I had finally found something over the past month to be actually quite addictive and interesting. In the world of Guardia where beings called Edel Raids co-exist with humans, these beings are often oppressed and denied their freedom. Edel Raids have the ability to fuse with a human and become a living weapon giving many of those unscrupulous at heart to lust after them. The story focuses on the adventures of a young sky pirate named Coud Van Giruet, an Edel Raid named Reverie Metherlance, and three guardians of an Edel Raid protection organization called Arc Aile named Cisqua, Rowen, and Kuea. Reverie Metherlance is set on journeying to the legendary land of gold called Edel Garden, but it turns out that she is a powerful and rare Edel Raid, a descendent of one of the seven shichikihojou bloodlines which leads to many villains attempting to kidnap her for themselves.
Among the many adversaries they encounter, Coud and his companions match up against a shadowy organization known as Chaos Choir whose mysterious goals spew discord among the Arc Aile protected lands. However, as the series goes on, Coud finds that he has precious little to trust at all.
Cutting to the chase, I found this serie's characters to be vivid and enjoyable. Unlike a whole lot of other series, these characters, although young, can strike a deep chord in anyone who sees them. Themes such growing up, exemplified by Coud and Ren and the innocence of youth are all presented in this series. Coud growing up, becoming a man as his mentor Boss said to him, empowers him to protect Ren, and throughout the course of their difficulties, learn more about the world and unfortunately losing his naivete and innocence as a result also.
It is startling to see sometimes how standard some directors present their characters and although those in Elemental Gelade present similar themes and also develops in similar ways, it is quite enjoyable and different in execution. For example, Coud is only around 14, and probably unlike most series actually looks around that age. It becomes engrossing to see how Coud develops and handles situations around him. Which in most cases is without thinking! Then again, it becomes hilarious due to his naivete when it comes to women having never met one, not even his mother since he was born. And so when Ren, equally innocent about that sort of thing comes along,...... accidents happen.
So if you have time, check it out. It's shonen and so everyone should enjoy it, its another series worth watching.
