Samurai Deeper Kyo
What would you do if a wicked looking samurai with glowing ruby red eyes turned to you holding his too long katana after killing a thousand men? Well, Demon Eyes Kyo would kill you in a heartbeat, or less, depending on his mood. This story is about him and his fellow adventurers who help him in his journey to get his body back.
Whoa, whoa, lets back up for a moment. This story begins during the Battle of Sekigahara, the penultimate deciding factor in the selection of the new Shogunate. It is here the principle characters, Kyo, Kyoshiro, Sanada Yukimura, Tokugawa Hidetata, and Sakuya are introduced. The battle is fought between Yukimura's Western Army and Hidetata's father, Tokugawa Ieyasu's Eastern Army. However, the great 1000 man slayer, Demon Eyes Kyo seem to be a devil's advocate and his conducting his bloody rampage across the battlefield. The only man who has a chance for his defeat is the noble Mibu Kyoshiro. And fight they do, only somehow everything is obliterated by a gigantic comet that falls at that moment.
Years later, a bounty hunter by the name of Shiina Yuuya comes across a highly intoxicated Mibu Kyoshiro, only evidently he is only a medicine salesperson. She seduces him to capture him only to be disturbed by a ken'you, or mutated human beast monster. Then the unbelievable happens. Mibu Kyoshiro awakens and out comes Demon Eyes Kyo.
Without going into much further detail, it is revealed that Mibu Kyoshiro defeated Demon Eyes Kyo at that crucial hell of Sekigahara and then sealed Kyo's soul inside his own, Kyo's body is hidden away at the same time. Now the seer Sakuya portends a great evil to come and reawaken the Age of Chaos, the Age of Civil War and all of Japan will be in great turmoil. And through this quest that Kyoshiro/Kyo undertakes to find Kyo's body, would ultimately lead them into the center of all this chaos. The mysterious Mibu Clan, the Tokugawa Shogunate, and other deceptive intricacies will weave a story unlike any other. Thus begins the saga of Samurai Deeper Kyo.
Okay, that aside, Samurai Deeper Kyo was breathtaking actually. I found it to have even more epic and gripping fight scenes that Rurouni Kenshin, and the main character, Demon Eyes Kyo is yet at the same time as cold as Battosai at his peak, and yet even more of an enigma than Battosai as the series goes on. Simply put, this is one helluva exciting of a samurai series that while presenting an original and invigorating plotline, also manages to give us some of the most memorable characters up to date, namely Kyo/Kyoshiro and the eccentric gatling gun wielding Migeira from the west, as well as the entertaining Tokugawa Hidetata.
This was one thrilling joyride from start to finish, highly entertaining, and addictive. Watch if you must, then stay up all night to finish!
