After fighting in numerous interstellar wars, mankind forms the Galactic Union to bring stability and to prevent conflicts between different planets. However, disputes between members of the union itself persists. , the Galactic Organization of Trade and Tariffs (GOTT) was formed. This organization utilizes the superpowered ES taskforce to maintain order. Eclair and Lumiere are two low-ranking ES members who carry out missions for GOTT. However, as they begin to see more and more of the galaxy, they soon realize that what they know about GOTT, the Galactic Union, and even themselves might not be all there is to it...
First off, the animation. I was impressed with the animation when I first started this series, and its STILL carrying over. The animation is just clean and detailed, and it never has any of those "fuzzy moments" where the animation just seems to go off and die on you. The characters were clearly detailed, and I actually thought that many of them were fairly unique (especially now that many ideas have been used and overused). Plus, the fight scenes, which occur frequently, are enjoyable to watch, even non-violent conflicts.
Let me just say this. I had high hopes when going into Kiddy Grade, seeing as GONZO is a studio that when producing anime, usually guarentees success. Sadly, Kiddy Grade is not up there with the likes of Full Metal Panic and Hellsing, or even Vandread for that matter. which was a big disappointment half the reason i watched this show is because the makers also produced vandread and full metal panic 2 of my other favorite animes
The show start out rather poorly. From about episodes 1-8 or so, the characters don´t actually develop... they´re just presented to us. They don´t start changing until episode 9 or 10, where Eclaire makes a sudden deviation from her usual personality that its almost an entirely new person. Fortunately, the other characters follow suit, but not without sacrificing nearly 1/3 of the series. Gonzo did an excellent job with creating other "minor" ES-members, such as Tweedledee and Tweedledum, just to name a group. However, some of the other ones (Especially the team with that little girl) can get especially annoying. Plus, Lumiere´s seemingly unnatural attraction to wine is a bit disturbing...
The plot is the big one. I thought the first 8 episodes were crap. Nothing really happened, the story didn´t progress,. Unfortunately, 1/3 of the series was wasted on it, which pissed me off. But then, however, Kiddy Grade managed to turn itself around from episodes 9-24. Unlike first 8 episodes, the last 2/3 of the series was better, filled with past references, battles between rival ES-members, a conspiracy within the government,
Again, the major problems of this series are the first 8 episodes, and the incredible amount of non-plot related scenes is simply ridiculous. Though I can see why they might´ve needed to do that so that they could execute the real "juice" of the series without rushing it, its still unforgiving. Having Eclaire running around with her panties shoved in the camera may be invigorating, but it doesn´t build an anime. So keeping that in mind, Just watch the first couple episodes, then switch to 9; you won´t lose a thing.
eh i give kiddy grade a 7/10 just cause of the crappy start
