Default Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

Code Geass has won many awards and accolades for its storyline and direction. However, to some viewers the hype may not be warranted. Don't get me wrong here, Code Geass is an awesome anime, though, it may not rank as some viewer's top choices. Critically it has been acclaimed and here is its basic story:

On August 10th, 2010, a.t.b., the Holy Empire of Britannia overpowered Japanese forces and conquered the country with their robotic weapons, the Knightmare Frames, in less than a month. Japan lost its freedom and rights and was renamed Area 11. The Japanese people, renamed as "Elevens", were forced to survive in ghettos, while Britannians lived in first-class settlements. Rebel elements persisted, however, as pockets of Japanese organizations who struggled against the Empire for the independence of Japan.

After his father, the Emperor of Britannia, did nothing to pursue the terrorists who murdered his mother and crippled his sister, the young prince named Lelouch vowed to destroy Britannia. Seven years later, living in Area 11, he encounters a mysterious girl who gives him the power of Geass. With it, he finally has the power that he needs to defeat Britannia and fulfill his two wishes: to seek revenge for his mother and to construct a world in which his beloved sister can live happily.

This is somewhat of a dark anime, one in which nationalities of people are oppressed and one of those typical darkness that plagues a protagonists state of mind. The protagonist of this anime are refreshingly intelligent, Lelouch Lamperouge, [a mouthful!] is a clever young man with a pretty shrewd mind. With a genius level intellect, he can access and come up with numerous strategies that viewers will be pleased to see. Lelouch's power of Geass, "the power of absolute obedience", allows him to momentarily control a mind, in a fashion similar to hypnotism, and is situated in his left eye. When activated, a red bird-shaped sigil, similar to the mark on C.C's forehead, lights up in the eye and reaches out to its targets. Lelouch's Geass later evolves and becomes permanently activated.

It is through this power, given to him by C.C. in the beginning that the entire story begins. His decisions in who to control and ultimately his establishment as a terrorist leader named Zero lends it to the fact that Code Geass reflects choices one must make in life. Lelouch is arrogant, and is a overall cold individual. This anime is remarkable and unique in that it characterizes its players and individuals through original attitudes.

It's definitely recommended, one of the fewer good animes that come out recently.
