It can be for males too, in rare cases. An example would be onii-chan, which basically means Big Brother. Avan-onii-chan.

As for kun, that's usually associated more with males, meaning a familiar male friend, or just someone you know who happens to be younger than, or close to, your age. An example would IchiNaru. Ichi-kun. Simple.

Any other honorifics ya want me to talk about?

And yes, Avan-kun is ok. Or -sempai, or just normal old Sempai.
