(Oh well. Perhaps the string is a visible mental link. Think of it like this:

B.M. finds animal and begins controlling it. This string becomes attached between the two of them, so the B.M. can control the animal. The only drawback to this is that the B.M. is, shall we say, vulnerable and immobile?)
