Honestly, I think even 600 pixels is about 3-4 times too big. Signatures should be just what their name implies, a short, concise signing off on each post, for personalization and minor relief from the wall of text in a long thread. What I see a lot of people doing is making
billboards, which make browsing any thread incredibly annoying, since the ratio of text to repetetive pictures and gifs on screen goes way down. I mean it's one thing if it's a thread for posting pictures and gifs in, but these are the same pictures and gifs over and over that occur with every post that user makes.
It gets old fast, especially when someone's signature takes up half the screen or more. The amount of scrolling I have to do just to read a thread when I have signatures enabled is too much, imo, particularly when you have half the people in a thread making posts where the text is shorter than their signature. It's supposed to be the other way around!

I'm just saying that because it's on topic. I'm not complaining. What I usually do is disable the display of signatures through my user control panel, so I don't see any of them most of the time. However, that's not to say I hate signatures. I just hate the way they are so enormous and over-animated on these boards.
One of the more effective ways I've seen on a message board for displaying image signatures was back on codegeassfan.com, the signature would show up for a user's first post on every page of a certain thread. Every following post by that user, at least on the same page, would not be followed by their signature. Since people here tend to like their billboard-esque animated signatures, I think this would be the best strategy for minimizing the annoyance of these things. After all, if it's just a matter of personalizing each post, the avatar does the same thing. We really don't need a user's signature to show up after every post he or she makes in the same thread. I mean, do I really need to be reminded that some person's signature looks like
that with every one of his posts?
