My review of something wicked this way comes, think I'll actually get a grade on this?
So heres my essay on "something wicked this way comes" by Ray Bradbury, which I didn't actually read for shit, I just kinda flipped through it and shitted the whole thing out. I honestly tried to make it at least half serious, but.. I think I failed
Anyways a couple of friends found it funny so I thought I'd share it to all of you and then you could all make a bet on what grade I'll get on this... if any according to previous reviewers... but I guess it's mostly for the lolz
<insert title here>
the prompt said nothing about the title being related to the text
With “Something wicked this way comes” being filled with life lessons at every intersection, finding just one life lesson to write about would be harder than actually writing about said lesson. But of course due dates and the like make people(students) abandon all value for quality, instead prioritizing to finish the assignment at whatever cost. I would like to announce to the reader beforehand that this essay is probably one of those.
After painful stretches of analyzing the novel in the time that I was given to write about the analyzing I should have finished before, I finally came upon, or rather created from the themes in the book, this life lesson, “anything promising immortality is not worth the consequences”, the last part being replaceable with anything negative that may make it sound more intellectual.
All of the characters are tempted to ride the merry-go-round, of course to different extents. While Jim spasdomanically shot himself in the general direction of it in hopes of a free ticket to puberty and beyond, Will put a bit more thought(compared to Jim’s lack of) into the whole entire “immortal” concept, and was quick to stop him, but even later on he is slightly drawn to the magic of the ride. Charles Halloway, Will’s dad, is of course tempted to ride backwards on it, predictable considering there was a whole chapter(2 pages) dedicated to him sulking about his age, but age also bringing wisdom he quickly noticed the draw backs of the merry go round:
“a 50 year old inside a 10 year old boy’s body would be awkward” yes it would be, even more when put out of context. Bowchikabowwows aside, the mind of a 80 year old inside a 5 year old would be very strange, if not comical, I could imagine a family film based off of that concept, described as “heart warming” by the New York times. The same could be said for a 5 year old inside a 50 year old’s body, but that would be more depressing than hilarious. But the main point seems to be that even if the body could change easily the mind could never keep up to that kind of rapid change, that may be why all of the carnival members are completely insane, magical powers aside.
Of course that would be the first thing to pop up to some one’s mind, the real darkness of the merry go round is that “once you start, you’d always come back, one more ride, one more ride, after a while you’d offer rides to friends, family, maybe thats how the carnival started, maybe that Dark-”, and I’ll cut that quote before it fills more space than the paragraph describing it. Really not much to elaborate on that, apparently the merry go round creates some sort of addiction reminiscent of the pringles slogan
All promises of immortality have consequences not worth what is gained, would be my best attempt at rephrasing my thesis. But out of all the themes and Morales presented in this book this one stuck out to me, but I guess it was supposed to. Of course theres all of the courage and bravery and friend ship and laughter nonsense sprinkled about, but I think we get enough of that with Harry Potter. I’m glad there was a deeper theme than all of those “stock themes”. Not to say that I don’t value those virtues but it can get a bit generic after a while, emphasis on the “can”. So if you ever encounter a merry-go-round of immortality, how you will identify it as such being another question, Bradbury recommends you don’t ride it, if you’re really paranoid then just don’t ride any merry go rounds from now on, I tend not to anyways.
i say c maybe less depending on how harsh the teacher was but i could tell where you just gave up and pulled it out of your ass so im sure a teacher will
